Funding and Support
Our funding model allows participation by anyone
To establish sustainable funding, the project allows you to get involved and support it through either:
- Institutions affiliated with authors in the collections can sponsor specific titles written by their institution’s scholars. For example, Purdue University, with three authors represented, has supported opening those 3 works at a cost of $11,400.
- Institutions without affiliated authors can contribute general support for the program or can sponsor individual titles.

Costs & transparency on how your investment is spent
The cost of sponsorship is $3,800 per title. This fully funds the creation of an open access version of each book and the costs break down as follows:
- $2,000 is paid to the participating Press
- $500 is paid to convert the print book to fully accessible EPub3 and PDF files
- $250 covers the cost to host, in perpetuity, an ebook on the Fulcrum platform
- $200 is for discovery services, including the external preparation of MARC records and sharing files with 3rd party OA content hosts (e.g., JSTOR, Project MUSE)
- $350 for title list development, coordination of presses, and overall project management of the program
- $300 for marketing, outreach to libraries, and administration of the sales of the sponsorship program
- $100 supports outreach to affiliated scholarly communities
- $100 per book funds the opening of approximately 3 unsponsored titles per collection
Leadership of the program is supported in-kind by both the University of Michigan Libraries’ Publishing Services and the Big Ten Academic Alliance.
We're seeking sponsorship for 120 titles per collection but each collection will be capped at the first 100 books sponsored. Collections and the books within them are published on a rolling basis when support is secured to open a specific title.
Real-time tracking of secured funds will be available online to ensure transparency and encourage broad participation.
